Valuation and assumptionsMcKesson generates enormous revenue and cash flow but earns razor-thin margins. The investment depends on whether specialty and GLP-1 volume growth can offset structural margin compression from customer concentration. The market prices in continued growth, leaving little margin of safety if volumes disappoint.
Customer concentration: CVS Health represents approximately 24% of revenue. A contract loss or materially worse renewal terms would be difficult to offset and could permanently impair earnings power.
McKesson is the largest US pharmaceutical distributor, moving drugs from manufacturers to pharmacies, hospitals, and providers. It earns a distribution spread on enormous volume plus fees from specialty distribution, oncology services, and technology solutions. FY2026 revenue was $403bn with a 3.6% gross margin and 1.5% operating margin.
At $881.51, the stock trades at approximately 19.8x FY2027 adjusted EPS guidance of $44.60. A reverse DCF at 7.5% WACC implies the market expects approximately 7–8% annual FCF growth, mid-single-digit revenue growth, and continued buybacks. This is broadly consistent with management's 13–16% long-term EPS growth target.
A valuation model that works backward from a share price to find combinations of growth, margins, and other assumptions consistent with that price.
In this report: Used to infer what growth and margin assumptions the current share price implies. At $881.51, the market appears to price in approximately 7–8% annual FCF growth.
McKesson is a high-quality business at a fair price. Base-case intrinsic value is approximately $880–920 per share. The stock offers 10–13% expected annual returns in the base case, adequate but not exceptional. The margin of safety is thin below $800, and the risk/reward is balanced. I rate the stock a hold at current levels.
The weighted average required return of a company's debt and equity providers, used to discount cash flows to the firm.
In this report: Used as the discount rate in the DCF. I estimate 7.5% based on a risk-free rate of 4.2%, equity risk premium of 4.7%, and a beta of 0.7.
Operating margin. At 1.54%, margin expansion of 10bps adds approximately $2.50 per share in EPS. Margin is driven by specialty mix and operating expense leverage.
The degree to which incremental revenue flows through to operating profit. For McKesson, operating leverage comes from fixed distribution infrastructure and technology platforms spreading over higher volumes.
In this report: Operating leverage is the primary mechanism for margin expansion. In FY2026, operating expenses as a percentage of gross profit improved 293 basis points.
Buyback pace. At $5bn annually, buybacks reduce share count by approximately 4% per year, amplifying EPS growth. This depends on free cash flow generation and the price paid.
The change in share count from stock issuance and repurchases. McKesson has reduced diluted shares from 160.6m in FY2021 to 119.2m in Q1 FY2027 through buybacks.
In this report: Buybacks amplify EPS growth but only create value if shares are repurchased below intrinsic value.
Consolidated operating margin. Positive: above 1.6%. Warning: below 1.4% for two consecutive quarters.

CVS contract renewal terms. Any news of renewal, renegotiation, or loss is material.
Oncology network provider additions. Positive: above 500 net adds annually. Warning: below 200.
Stock-based compensation was not available in the platform-verified XBRL table and was not independently verified from the 10-K. Live consensus estimates were not available. The exact FY2027 free cash flow figure relies on management guidance rather than reported results. The long-term normalised operating margin is uncertain given five years of margin compression.
